Getting in

The front door has a keypad lock: type in the code we sent you on WhatsApp. There is no physical key and no lockbox to look for.

If the code does not work the first time, wipe the keypad with a dry hand and type it again, slowly.

The password is unlocked with the code we sent along with the address.

The router is in the living room, behind the TV. If it drops, unplug it, count to 30 and plug it back in.

How the house works

Fans

The house has no air conditioning: it cools down with fans and with the breeze off the lagoon, which usually picks up late afternoon.

The trick is to open windows on opposite sides and point the fan outwards rather than inwards — it pulls the breeze through and changes the air in the whole room.

On hotter days, close the curtains on the sunny side in the morning.

Shower

The temperature switch is behind the bathroom door. Verão = warm, Inverno = hot. Only switch with the water off.

Stove and oven

The gas valve is in the laundry area, behind the door. Open it before cooking and close it when you leave.

TV and streaming

Use the black remote, source HDMI 1. Feel free to log into your own Netflix — just log out before check-out.

Washing machine

The machine will not start empty. It has a weight sensor and needs laundry inside — if you pressed start and nothing happened, that is why, not a fault.

The Quick programme handles beach clothes in 40 minutes. Detergent is in the cupboard above the machine.

Hang things on the outdoor line: they dry in an afternoon.

Barbecue

Charcoal is not provided — you can buy it at the downtown supermarket. Grill and skewers are in the outdoor cabinet.

Gate

The gate remote hangs next to the front door. Do not take it to the beach. If the power fails, pull the yellow lever on the motor to open manually.

  • Keep the volume down after 10pm

    The houses here are close together and the neighbours live here year-round.

  • No smoking indoors

    The smell stays in the fabrics and the next guest notices. The balcony and outdoor area are fine.

  • Rinse the sand off before coming in

    There is an outdoor shower at the entrance for this. Sand scratches the floor and clogs the drain.

  • Visitors until 10pm, arranged in advance

    The house is sized for the number of guests on the booking. No parties, but friends over for lunch are fine.

  • No cooking oil or sand down the sink

    The plumbing here is old and clogs easily. Pour used oil into a bottle and bin it.

  • The barbecue is yours to use

    Use it freely. Line the bottom with aluminium foil before lighting it, if you have some — cleaning up afterwards is then a matter of folding it and binning it. Let the ashes cool completely before disposing of them.

  • Put the hammock and anything left outside away every night

    The wind turns overnight and takes whatever is loose, and the salt air ruins fabric and metal left out in the damp. Hammock, cushions and towels spend the night indoors.

  • Bin bags go on the fence hook, in the morning only

    Collection is Monday to Saturday in the morning, and the hook is on the outside of the fence. A bag left out overnight becomes food for dogs and cats — it will be torn open across the pavement by morning.

  • Lift the furniture instead of dragging it

    Dragged tables and chairs scratch the floor, and the scratch stays. If you need to move something, get a hand and lift it — and put it back before you leave.

  • Nothing wet on the beds or the sofa

    Wet swimwear leaves salt stains that do not come out in the wash, and a mattress takes days to dry through in this climate. Use the outdoor shower, dry off and change before lying down. To rest in your swimsuit, there is the hammock and the chairs outside.

  • Toilet paper and pads go in the bin, never in the toilet

    This is the most important request in the house. The plumbing here is old and does not take paper: it blocks the same day, and then the bathroom is out of use in the middle of your holiday. There is a lidded bin next to the toilet, and it is emptied at cleaning.

  • Crockery, cutlery and kitchen things stay in the house

    Glasses, plates, cutlery, pans, the barbecue knife: none of it goes to the beach, to the kiosk or to a friend’s place. What leaves rarely comes back in one piece, and the next guest is the one who finds it missing at lunchtime. To take food or drink out, use disposables.

  • The house towels do not go to the beach

    The bath towels are white: fine sand stays in the weave for good, and sunscreen stains never come out in the wash. One afternoon on the beach retires a towel. Bring your own beach towel — and if you forget, tell us and we will sort something out.

  • Wash up or load the dishwasher — no dirty dishes in the sink
  • Take the rubbish out and hang it on the fence hook
  • Log out of your Netflix account (and any other streaming app) on the TV
  • Turn off the fans and all the lights
  • Close all windows
  • Put the hammock and anything outside away
  • Leave used towels in the bathroom
  • Check that the door locked behind you
